Our Starting Point
We are a family united by the belief that a person's circumstances should not determine the limits of their future.
We see philanthropy as an opportunity and a responsibility: to help address problems that are difficult, persistent, and too often left unresolved. Our role is not to have all the answers. It is to ask good questions, learn from others, and direct resources toward efforts that can make a meaningful difference.
Opportunity, dignity, and the conditions to thrive
Our philanthropy is grounded in the belief that access to food, education, health, and basic security should not be determined by the circumstances of one's birth. We see these not simply as needs to be met, but as essential foundations for human dignity, participation, and possibility. We are particularly interested in the relationship between food, education, and a person's ability to build a healthy, fulfilling life.
Hunger is about more than food. It can reflect a lack of security, belonging, and access to the basic resources that make it possible to participate fully in society. Education is about more than the classroom. It can open doors, expand choices, and help people shape their own futures.
These challenges do not exist in isolation. They are shaped by family circumstances, community resources, public systems, and experiences across generations. We believe lasting progress requires an understanding of the whole person and the environment in which they live.
From providing for needs to expanding possibilities
We seek out thoughtful, evidence-informed approaches led by people who understand these challenges firsthand. Our role is to listen, learn, and help good work go further.
We focus on the interconnected roles that food, education, and community play in people's lives. We believe that when people have the resources, support, and opportunities they deserve, they are better positioned to shape their own futures.
Principles Behind our Giving
-
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights offers an enduring expression of the principles that guide us.
Article 25 recognizes everyone's right to an adequate standard of living for their health and well-being, including food, housing, medical care, and necessary social services. Article 26 recognizes everyone's right to education and its role in the full development of the human person.
These principles reflect how we think about philanthropy. Food and education are more than services to provide; they are essential to people's ability to live with dignity, exercise agency, and participate fully in their communities.
We see our role as helping support the conditions in which these rights can be meaningfully realized.
-
We believe effective philanthropy must be able to do both.
The branches are the immediate challenges people face: hunger, educational barriers, instability, and the difficult choices families must make when resources are scarce. Addressing these needs matters, and it matters now.
The roots are the conditions that allow these challenges to persist: unequal access to opportunity, systems that leave people behind, and the interconnected effects of poverty, trauma, isolation, and insecurity.
We want to support work at both levels. That means helping meet immediate needs while also investing in approaches that strengthen communities, expand people's choices, and address the underlying causes of hardship.
Neither is sufficient on its own. Relief without longer-term change can leave the same challenges in place; systemic ambition without attention to present suffering can leave people waiting for help they need today.
-
We are drawn to problems that resist easy answers and to people willing to take them on thoughtfully.
We believe good intentions must be matched by evidence, capable leadership, and a clear understanding of local needs. We look to build on what works, learn from what doesn't, and support solutions that might not otherwise have the resources to succeed.
We take the work seriously, but ourselves lightly. We don't expect to have all the answers. We do expect to keep asking questions, listen closely, and continually examine whether we are contributing as much as we can.
